A cold morning at the Rec

This morning we hosted Rhymney and it was possibly the coldest morning we have faced at mini rugby.  We encountered cold winds, rain, hail, sleet and snow.  It was great to see the dedication of all parents, siblings grandparents and some U10’s there to support.  Gabriel Jones who is currently injured was there to support, we wish him well with the recovery and hope he is soon back on the field.  Thanks to James for taking the photos.

Oakdale started the game, Rhymney took the ball from the kick off and were soon on the scoreboard.  Oakdale came to life and we saw Logan side stepping through the defence before offloading to Hudson, he saw a break and was off to the try line.  The supporters thought he was going to make it and we shouting encouragement but a quick defender caught him just before the line, the ball was passed to Dafydd who sped to the corner to equalise.

Rhymney responded with a try and from their restart Zac caught the ball and a weaving run, the ball went loose and was claimed by the visitors.  The Dale were penalised for making a tackle without the ball, Rhymney advanced to the try line but were prevented from scoring by an excellent turn over by Liam Haynes.  Ethan made good ground ploughing through the defence, Harvey took it up further and the dale worked hard through a few phases before Hudson secured the try.  Rhymney scored two more tries.  Rhymney restarted, the ball went over the dead ball line. Jensen kicked the ball down the field and was chased and caught by Connor, Jensen dodged a few defenders but the try line wasn’t crossed before the half time whistle.

Half time Oakdale 2 – Rhymney 4

If the boys had gone in a nice warm changing room they probably wouldn’t have made it back on the field.  Both teams were a few players down due to the cold and others for both teams reluctantly took to the field for the second half.  All players had extra layers and gloves in an attempt to be able to feel their fingers!

Rhymney started in the same way as they started the first half with a try. The Dale battled back, Ethan had an excellent run, he offloaded to Ben and onto Connor, the supporters were shouting encouragement and Connor crossed the try line. Rhymney were awarded a line out, the passed to the scrum half who kicked the ball, Logan was in position to catch the ball, James received the ball and he carried it over the try line.

Rhymney had an excellent run which caught the Dale off-guard to score.  The next phase saw Ethan and James taking the ball up the field, a turnover ball gave Rhymney the opportunity to advance to the try line, they were penalised for holding on.  Evan took the penalty he couldn’t penetrate to the defence, he passed back to Ethan who jumped over the defence to score.  Rhymney had another break, Connor and Liam tried their hardest to chase, Connor got his hand on the player but couldn’t quite bring him down despite putting all his effort in.  The Dale persevered, James took the ball up and after another few phases we saw Ben Thomas take the last points of the morning.

Final Score Oakdale 6 – Rhymney 7
