You're Hall I need to get by

With parents turning up in vest tops and boob tubes you could have been forgiven that it was a barmy summer’s morning today such was the glorious weather as the Crazy Eights welcomed good friends Risca to the Recreation Ground.

With Kian away after putting his head where it shouldn’t have been and Harri turning the Christmas Lights on in Tredegar there were still two strong sides looking to carry on the winning ways of late.

The Apples started off in good fashion but Risca were in no mood to lie down and roll over. For every try that the Dale scored the away side replied with one of their own. It was Max Baldwin who got the early scores and he was able assisted with some strong runs from Shay Edwards and Elliot Hall who made the yards and gave their team mate the space to score. Griff Tovey was also in good spirits and keeping his hands down he also got his name on the score sheet early on. Poppy Crewe, although thirsty, made some good tags and all in all the Apples made a great start in the first ten minutes.

The Bananas took their time to click into gear and some lethargic attacking and defending gave Risca plenty of opportunity to claw their way back into the game. Although, Olly Morris was looking sharp and got himself a brace of tries to steady the ship. Albie Wynn was running the hard yards and Josh Johnson was constantly in support which allowed the play to flow and for JJ to get a try or two of his own. There was a good improvement in Hannah Benger’s running and she was looking for gaps rather than the touchline which pleased the coaches.

After two periods of ten minutes it was the Dale who held the lead at 12-7 and after a quick conflab the coaches decided to go again with two full periods of ten minutes.

The Apples took to the field again and this time it was Kingsley Parry Lewis who was showing a clean pair of heals with some tremendous running and he was able assisted by Josh Bowen who was tagging like his life depended on it. Tries soon flowed from Griff and Max and the Apples, on the morning, did themselves proud.

So it was left to the Bananas to finish the morning off and this period they certainly put their rugby hats on and showed a good improvement from their first period. Brodie Baker sparkled in a great team performance with a clutch of tries and Alfie Short and Olly Bishop showed great tenacity in defence and attack to help their team mates in whatever way the could. The Referee blew the whistle for the end of the match and with a 20-11 score line everyone was happy with their morning’s efforts.

The Player of the Match was awarded to Elliot Hall today. He was spoken to before the game about his lines of running and not only showed a huge improvement in his decision making but also displayed a high level of tagging ability to help his team mates peg their opponents back time after time. That’s what the coaches ask for that when direction is given the players take it on board and implement it in a game situation and Elliot certainly did that today. Well done young sir!!
