Bonus Point win and still Unbeaten

Oakdale welcomed New Tredegar to a dry but windy Rec on Saturday afternoon and maintained their unbeaten start to the season, winning 29 points to 23.

With Oakdale unbeaten and the visitors yet to record a win so far this season, anyone expecting an easy home win was in for a big shock as New Tredegar played their part in an entertaining game.

Oakdale, playing with the wind, started on the front foot and after phase after phase of well controlled, patient play sent young centre Josh ‘Teapot’ Thomas over for his first try in Oakdale colours after only 6 minutes. The conversion was missed and the lead was 5-0.

The Oakdale supporters hoped this would be a springboard to push on to a comfortable win but New Tredegar had other ideas and scored next to level the game up at 5-5.

The game was now end-to-end and the early tries kept coming. Cerrig Wilson finished off a good Oakdale passage of play to take the home side back into the lead. Simon Veall added the extras and Oakdale led 12-5.

There were no more tries for the rest of the half as both teams cancelled each other out, although New Tredegar did kick a penalty to reduce the deficit to 4 points.

Half-time score: Oakdale 12-8 New Tredegar

New Tredegar started the 2nd half stronger and within 3 minutes had kicked a 2nd penalty. Another 3 minutes later they scored their 2nd try of the game and took the lead for the first time. The conversion was successful and the visitors led 18-12.

Oakdale needed a response and got it almost straight away. Having got themselves into the New Tredegar 22 they were determined not to leave without points. When the ball found itself in the hands of Scott ‘Roly’ Evans, who was having another stormer, no-one was stopping him from getting over for Oakdale’s 3rd try. The conversion went wide but the home side were back within a point.

With the momentum now with Oakdale, they got themselves back into the lead with a good try by 2nd row Ryan Jarman. The kick was missed but Oakdale had their 4th try, a bonus point and a 22 points to 18 lead.

As the game was coming to a close David Fortune scored Oakdale’s fifth try of the game and finally had a 2 score lead. Veall kicked the conversion and Oakdale led 29-18.

The relief on the side was evident but New Tredegar hadn’t finished. Spurred on by what most thought were some generous refereeing decisions, the Newts scored the last try of the game. The conversion was missed and Oakdale had to see out the last few minutes.

Full-time score: Oakdale 29-23 New Tredegar

Oakdale will be pleased with their 2nd try bonus point of the season, outscoring the visitors 5 tries to 3 and maybe the Newts will be satisfied with their 3rd losing bonus point of the season having only been in the lead for 13 minutes of the game.

There were some very good performances on the Oakdale side but Man of the Match went to Roly, which he celebrated by giving up on Stoptober after 3 ½ days! #legend

There was also a welcome return to the kitchen for Jenny Thomas who provided an after-match meal of sausage, chips and curry sauce with bread and butter. Cheers Jen!
